SACRISTANS Opening SPP Church and Locking Up After Mass

​Each sacristan will be issued a key to the church doors. Please return this key to the parish administrator if you are no longer performing sacristan duties.
Before Mass
Please open the church by 9:00 AM.
  • This allows the choir to enter the church, and also those setting up coffee/ treats.
  • You can enter church using your key through the church hall, or through either of the side metal doors (by the sacristy or by the bell tower.
Please open all doors in the church and church hall as follows:
  • Church doors
    • Use the “hex key” hanging in the janitor’s closet to unlock from the inside:
  • North entrance metal door (near bells, restroom)
  • West main entrance metal doors (4 hex-key locks)
  • Use your personal church key to unlock:
  • Wooden door from hall to church
  • South entrance metal door (near sacristy)
  • Sacristy doors
  • Prop open
  • Double doors from Narthex (entrance) to Nave (main area of church)
    These stay open at all times except when temperature below 0 degrees
  • Church Hall doors
    • Use your church key to unlock:
  • Door to money counter room
  • Turn on light
  • Turn on copier
  • Close door
  • Metal door in church hall to alley, east side (facing the parish office)
  • Metal door in kitchen to alley
  • Prop open
    • Double doors into church hall
      These stay open at all times except during Sunday school
  • After all doors open:
    • Complete other sacristan duties: Set up credence table, offertory table, turn on lights, etc.
    • Help Father with his vestments and microphone
    • Make sure we have the assigned altar servers by 9:45 AM. If not, recruit a server from the congregation


After Mass
  • Sacristy
    • Clean up sacristy while people are leaving church and going for coffee
      Remember
  • First rinse of sacred vessels into sacrarium
  • Use cloth towels hanging inside far right cabinet door to dry
  • Burn down sanctuary candles in metal ash tray on top of plastic disc
  • Church
    • Turn out all lights in church after people leave
      Remember:
  • Sliders down all switches in sacristy
  • Speaker system in sacristy off
  • Choir light near organ (red light) off
  • Outside lights turned off at the metal doors (South, West, North) off
  • Choir loft off
  • Ambry (holy oils) using remote off
  • Lock up church and sacristy
  • Lock all doors that you opened
  • Take care that the large metal doors at the main entrance are secure
  • Prop open
    • Double doors to narthex (to prevent plants from freezing)
  • After Coffee
  • Wait to lock other doors until after coffee concluded
  • If you need to leave early, please ask another sacristan to finish locking up after coffee concluded
  • Lock all doors in church hall
    Remember
  • Two metal doors to alley
  • North entrance to church (near bells)
  • Wooden door to church
  • Lock up money counting room AFTER money counters return from bank
  • Prop open
  • Bathroom doors during winter (to prevent pipes freezing)
  • Turn out all lights in church hall
  • You may ask those serving coffee to turn out lights in the hall and kitchen after they are done cleaning up, and to lock the kitchen door as they leave.
